Maya gets flak for Rs 5-cr garland

Lucknow, March 15: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati’s unique garland has run into controversy.

She was presented with a huge garland at the BSP’s “Maharally” here on Monday, which on a closer look was found to be made up of thousands of Rs 1,000 currency notes carefully strung together. Party sources revealed that notes worth Rs 5 crores made up the garland, which was presented to her by the party’s Karnataka unit.
BSP sources said the garland, under preparation for almost three months, had been created in Mysore.
The BSP initially denied the allegation that the garland was made up of currency notes, but when television channels started showing closeup shots of the same, it went on the defensive. The Congress and the SP sought an inq-uiry into the garland, which they termed as a “shameless display of wealth”.
