Marina livens up her musical act
Artiste: Marina and the Diamonds
There’s something to be said for a girl with a weird voice — no flutey nightingale tones and no hard rocking rasp, but vocals that, dredge up the ghosts of Kate Bush, Tori Amos (the pianos on most tracks help) and even crazy Nico if you’re old enough to remember.
Half-Greek, half-Welsh, Marina Diamandis, 24, dropped out of college to go full tilt at trying to make it as a musician — from recording her own tracks on Garageband to paying someone she found on Gumtree (a Craig’s List type site) to produce some tracks. She sold 70 home made EP’s through her myspace page.
Slowly but surely, she garnered a lot of attention (including being voted second on the BBC ‘Sound of 2010’ list) and her debut album, The Family Jewels, was released on February 22 this year where it peaked at number 4 in the UK Albums chart and has been certified silver.
You’re best equipped to introduce yourself to her via YouTube. The track, I’m not a robot is biting, clever and beautiful to watch.
Seventeen is upbeat, but misleadingly so. On the acoustic version of her track Hollywood you get the sharp edge of Diamandis — I’m obsessed with mess that’s America,” she croons, “She is a Polish girl in America, Tall, tanned, hot blonde girl called Ania, I asked her ‘Why would you wanna be a Hollywood wife?’ Because I don’t wanna end up living in a dive on Vine.
Great stuff! Scoot up a bit Lady Gaga, there’s a new sexy chick on the block.
