In a bid to revive the long-held tradition of chess in Kozhikode , the All Kerala Chess Association and Fischer Chess Academy will be organising a CAI Chess Carnival-2012 in the city from March.

About Rs 10 lakh will be distributed in the seven tournaments between March and December, and this is likely to attract a large number of players to the city.

“Kozhikode boasts of a great tradition of hosting FIDE international chess tournaments. Several tournaments were held in the city in the past, and the carnival will be a real boost to the chess lovers in the state,” says P. T. Ummer Koya, chairman of the carnival.

Scores of players will come from all over the state to take part in the tournament, as also those from outside. The first tournament, Lifestyle Builders Chess Tournament, will be held from March 3 to March 7.

“We are expecting about 100 chess players from across the country. Some of them have already registered. Altogether about ` One lakh will be distributed through the tournament as prize money. The competition will be held in Junior, Sub Junior and Senior categories, separately for men and women,” he said.

“There was a period when several famous players had come here to play for the international tourney. In recent times, we have become obscure on the chess map, and now I am trying to revive it.
We are conducting a tournament that gives out huge cash awards. Last year also, we have had several tournaments in the city and the response was immense,” he said.

Players from about 20 states have already registered for the first tournament.

CAI champions N. Abdul Majeed, Cheniram Pegu, Malleshwar Rao, P. K. Arjun, national aegis champion A. K. Jagadeesh, Fide Rated players A. N. K. Jose, K. Chandramohan, Deerendrakumar Das, and Anirban Basu will take part in the chess tournament.

The second tournament will be held in May. “We have published a calendar and all the details are available in the website http://www.fischerchess.org/,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
