Chess Assn calls for change
Ernakulam Chess Association and City Chess Club jointly organised a meeting in honour of world chess champion Viswanathan Anand in Kochi on Sunday.
Ludi Luiz MLA inaugurated the meeting in presence of P.V.N. Namboothiripad, district sports council president Zakir Hussain and city corporation councillor Gracy Joseph.
The MLA said he realised the importance chess has in the development of young minds and will raise the matter before the government. He said chess has to be part of the curriculum.
Association president and FIDE Master M.B. Muralidharan asked the MLA to pressurise the state government for giving more jobs in sports quota for chess players.
“Chess is a popular sport in the state but only one seat is given on sports quota for chess players, which has to be upgraded,” said Muralidharan.
At least 50 under-17 kids and their parents took part in the function which was held on the sidelines of district under-17 championship.
Later, Muralidharan, also a chess coach and another trainer Ganesh Bhatt analysed a few games from the world championship for the kids.
“Most young kids complain about lack of time while playing a 30 minute game and they have a lesson from the WC matches played between Anand and Boris Gelfand,” said Muralidharan.
“A player must train himself to play in all time controls. Anand’s ability, which he acquired through training, was to play fast and it gave him an edge over the Israeli GM in the championship,” Muralidharan told the young chess players.
