Windfall for TN, power outages down
Denying that Tangedco has ordered private windmill producers to stop generation, electricity minister Natham R. Viswanathan on Wednesday said the corporation has infrastructure to evacuate 3,000 MW of wind power from the total installed capacity of 6,696 MW.
“The wind mills cannot generate power to its full capacity. Usually, the maximum generation will be between 3,000 MW and 3,200 MW,” Mr Viswanathan said replying to the query raised by CPI (M) deputy floor leader K. Balabarathi and CPI member Gunasekaran.
The minister said with the availability of wind power, the loadshedding duration had been reduced across the state.
He said in the last two to three days, the power generation from the windmills varied from 1,540 MW to 2,100 MW.
“We have the infrastructure to evacuate wind power to the tune of 3,000 MW. Hence there is no need for us to ask the mill producers to stop generation,” he said.
Blaming the previous DMK government for not creating adequate infrastructure to evacuate wind power, he said they had allowed opening of new windmills without creating adequate
infrastructure.
“After AIADMK came to power, chief minister Jayalalithaa took steps to set up 400 KV and 230 KV substations by private producers themselves,” he said.
Electricity minister also said the corporation would repay the expense incurred by private producers from setting up sub station in five years without any interest.
“After the development of new infrastructures, the corporation can evacuate more than 3,000 MW of wind power,” he said.
