Welfare aid marks Kamaraj birth anniversary
Floral tributes and distribution of welfare aid marked the 110th birth anniversary celebrations of veteran Congress leader and former chief minister K. Kamaraj on Sunday.
The state, led by social welfare minister B. Valarmathi, paid floral tribute to the leader at his portrait here.
State ministers too joined Ms. Valarmathi. Union shipping minister G.K. Vasan, who was accompanied by Congress leaders, paid floral tributes to a portrait of Kamaraj at Marina here.
At the Sathyamurthy Bhavan, the Congress headquarters here, TNCC chief B.S. Gnanadesikan gave away welfare aid to the poor. Senior leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan and others participated.
The Southern Railway Employees’ Sangh, affiliated to the INTUC, NFIR and ITF, too celebrated Kamaraj’s birth anniversary at Unity House.
Kamaraj is credited with ushering in an education revolution in the state by increasing student intake in schools by introducing the revolutionary free noon-meal scheme.
Widely respected across the political spectrum both in state and national politics, Kamaraj was known for his simplicity in public life.
He was hailed as ‘Kingmaker’ for his role in the ascent of the late Indira Gandhi to the Prime Minister’s post. Opposition DMDK too paid tributes to the leader.
