Visually challenged protesters detained
Police on Thursday detained more than 200 visually-challenged people, including 100 women, who were staging a demonstration near Valluvar kottam in Nungambakkam to press for an appointment with the chief minister and present their charter of demands.
The members of the Arts and Literary Association for Visually Impaired Graduates said that they were staging demonstration for three days seeking an appointment with the chief minister to present their demands, which include government jobs and increase in scholarship amount for students.
The police detained them when they tried to march towards the chief minister’s residence in Poes Garden. The demonstrators alleged that the police manhandled many woman protesters, but the police said that many of the policewomen were ill-treated by the agitators while they were being taken to a marriage hall.
