Vidwan training on par with degree: HC

The Madras High Court has upheld that an academic degree or certificate could not be rated above the excellence passed on by distinguished artistes to next generation in choosing a nagaswaram vidwan for Arulmigu Kallazhagar Thirukoil at Azhagarcoil in Madurai.
Passing orders on appeals filed by one Chandrakala and the temple administrative officer, the HC bench comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice B. Rajendran observed that the performance of a person who has not gone to college but taken training from a vidwan would be so vibrant and different to hear than a person who merely passed out from the college with a degree of nagaswaram without sufficient training from a leading musician.
Refusing to interfere with the selection the temple vidwan, which was done by a team of experts in the instant case, the judges also upheld Chandrakala’s appointment.
Chandrakala and the temple AO moved the appeals after the HC struck down her appointment while passing orders on a petition filed by one Sankaranarayanan who was earlier selected for the same post as per a July 2004 notification that stipulated that candidates must possess a certificate/degree from a government institution.
However, Sankaranarayanan’s appointment cancelled and a fresh notification was issued in December 2004.
A team of experts chose Chandrakala as per the new notification, which made it compulsory for applicants to have certificate to prove that he/she had undergone training in nagaswaram.
Justifying that the cancellation of the first notification was to accommodate larger and more deserving people, the temple AO submitted in his appeal that there could be people without a college degree but who had proficiency in nagaswaram due to hereditary knowledge or personal training under leading vidwans and the condition stipulating a certificate from Government Music College would rule out the participation of skilled persons with eloquence and rich experience.
