Vaiko appears before court in Libel case
MDMK leader Vaiko on Thursday appeared before a sessions court in connection with a defamation complaint filed by the previous DMK government in 2007.
The VI additional sessions judge, P. Kaliyamurthy, posted the case to September 17 for examination of witnesses.
In his defamation complaint, the then city public prosecutor had submitted that in the issue of the New Indian Express dated December 25, 2006, Vaiko has charged the chief minister with malicious and defamatory words with the heading “Vaiko to PM: DMK trying to tarnish MDMK image” and a sub-heading,
“The State Government is gearing up the police force to prevent MDMK party cadres from coming to the party office. It is also planning to disrupt the meeting on Monday”.
The statement of Vaiko published in the newspaper contained false and baseless allegations and had completely damaged and undermined the reputation of the chief minister in the eye of his party cadres, colleagues and the general public, the complaint stated.
