Tree fire shocks residents
A huge tree at a temple in Choolai mysteriously caught fire on Sunday morning, leaving devotees and onlookers shocked and creating a flutter in the neighbourhood.
The fire was noticed at the top of the trunk of the banyan tree on the premises of the Mahalakshmi Amman Temple on CKP Street around 11 am.
As smoke started emanating from the top of the trunk, which then caught fire, onlookers informed the fire and rescue service.
“We dispatched two fire-fighting units to douse the fire as there are many houses around the temple. Luckily, we managed to control the fire very soon. Some small branches of the tree and leaves were burnt in the fire,” fire control room personnel said.
The fire seems to have began in the lower part of the trunk and spread to the top.
“Even a carelessly thrown burning cigarette can start such a fire,” the control room personnel said.
