TNEB asked for detailed scenario
The Madras high court on Thursday directed the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to file an affidavit stating in detail the power position in the state and particularly in Chennai and also what steps are being taken to rectify the low voltage problem in and around Chennai.
Petitioner S. Vijay of New Washermenpet sought a direction to TNEB and state government to attend to complaints regarding low voltage in and around Chennai city, rectify the problem within a timeframe and file a final report.
A division bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam said it cannot be denied that the supply of electricity in the state in general and Chennai city in particular is not up to the mark.
There has been constant fluctuation of voltage in and around Chennai city leading to severe hardship to the public, the bench said.
The petitioner said that complaints regarding low voltage were not properly attended to by TNEB in any area. TNEB authorities were not properly responding to phone calls made by the public regarding low voltage. They also refused to take necessary action even on written complaints.
The low voltage made it difficult for people to use refrigerators, mixies, grinder, air-conditioners, washing machines and other electrical and electronic items. Schoolgoing children and the elderly were suffering in this hot summer without proper sleep because of low voltage.
The state government had recently reduced power cut timings from two hours to one hour. However, it was imposing an indirect power cut and not trying to solve the problem, he said.
