TN prepares for prez elections
The stage is set for the conduct of presidential elections in the state on Thursday, with the state election department and Secretariat making elaborate arrangements.
All legislators and 14 AIADMK MPs and DMK MP D. Venugopal, will exercise their franchise in the state capital while all other MPs of other parties will cast their vote in New Delhi.
While the DMDK will ‘abstain’ from the polls, the CPI has announced a boycott of the elections.
Polling will take place at the committee room, legislative Assembly secretariat, and is scheduled to start at 10 am and end at 5 pm.
Only eligible voters will be allowed inside the election hall after identity card checks, said an election official.
The ballot sheets have been printed in Tamil and English, while the ballot boxes and ballot sheets have been flown in from New Delhi.
As there are only two candidates for presidential elections, the voters should put their preference(s) opposite the name(s) of candidates by marking figure 1 or/and 2 against the name of the candidate(s).
However, the second preference is optional and voters may or may not indicate the preference, state CEO Praveen Kumar said.
He added that the preference should be marked on the ballot paper only with the ballpoint pen supplied at the hall.
With AIADMK supporting NDA nominee P.A. Sangma, DMK, Congress, CPI(M), VCK, Puthiya Tamilagam and MMK have announced support for UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee. ECI observer Sujit Gulati arrived Wednesday to oversee the elections.
