TN to get 58 auto weather stations
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will setup 58 automatic weather stations (AWS) and 75 automatic rain gauge (ARG) stations in Tamil Nadu.
The department had planned to set up 2,000 AWS across India, of which Tamil Nadu would get 58, the deputy director general of meteorology of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, Dr Y.E.A. Raj told reporters after inaugurating the first of the 10 ARG stations at Sathyabama University in the city on Thursday.
“In the first phase we have started installing 28 AWS in the state and the rest will be done in the second phase,” he said.
IMD would install two ARG stations in every district in the first phase, said Raj, adding that in the second phase the number would increase to four.
“We want to closely monitor weather conditions, which help us in understanding the variability in parameters like rainfall, air temperature and relative humidity in the urban scenario,” he said.
Sathyabama University in Sholinganallur in the city became the first education institution in the city to have the ARG station.
The data from the ARG would be transmitted to IMD’s AWS lab at Pune and those interested in knowing weather related details like temperature, rainfall and relative humidity, can log on to www.imdaws.com and check the details, Raj said.
