Techie fights chain snatcher

A 23-year-old woman software engineer put up brave fight to ward off a chain snatcher at a bus stop at Tambaram early on Monday morning.

The youth could, however, save only the pendant with the miscreant managing to flee with the chain.

R. Kalaivani, who works in a software firm in the city, had just come back from her native place, Tirunelveli on Monday morning and was waiting there for a bus to go to Velachery where she stayed in a women’s hostel.

The bus stop was generally deserted until 5.30 am when a man posing as a passenger came there and initially pretended to wait for a bus.

The man then pounced on her and snatched her gold chain.
A shocked Kalaivani was, however, not ready to give her valuables without giving a fight.

The software engineer fought with the man as she shouted for help and suffered bruises on her hand.

“She held on to the pendant of the chain as the snatcher grabbed at her chain. Seeing her resistance and sensing trouble, the chain snatcher, who was about 25 years old, fled with just the chain, leaving the pendant in her hand,” the Selaiyur police said.

“He immediately crossed the road and fled, running away through a vacant ground. We are now on the lookout for the man based on the description given by her,” police said.
