Team to check on corrupt cops

With a view to check corruption among city traffic police personnel, a 50-plus strong internal vigilance/ intelligence team is working round the clock to ensure that traffic cops don’t fill their pockets instead of the government coffers.

Many of them try to negotiate with erring motorists to pay a bribe rather than paying a higher amount as fines.

“Yes, our internal vigilance team is very active. It is effective also,” said Mr Sanjay Arora, additional commissioner of police, Traffic, when this newspaper contacted him.

Sources said so far over 15 traffic police personnel have been suspended after they were found indulging in corrupt practices while enforcing traffic rules.

In most cases, after receiving inputs from the internal vigilance team, the traffic policemen were caught red-handed by senior officers.
