Teacher in dock for ‘negligence’
The city police have registered a case of negligence against a headmaster of a Puruasaiwalkam school after a boy studying in standard VI there suffered injury on his eye when another student threw a pen.
The nib of the pen hit the boy’s eye, causing an injury, said the police. However, there was a delay in taking the injured student to the doctor, the police added.
The incident happened at Muthaih Chettiyar Matriculatioin school(M Ct M) school on June 25 when a student named Karthik threw a pen at another student. The pen accidentally landed on the eye of Mahesh and pierced it.
The boy is now undergoing treatment at a government hospital. “It seems that the authorities at the school failed to understand the seriousness of the injury though the headmaster had agreed to bear the hospital expense,” police sources here said.
“However, some local politicians created a row and started bullying the headmaster, Dharmaraj. They demanded that the headmaster give lakhs of rupees in cash for the treatment of the boy. This prompted the headmaster to approach senior police officials for help,” said police sources.
Both the students, Mahesh and Karthik, are from not-so-affluent families and, as such, Mahesh’s family cannot afford getting him treated at a private hospital, while Karthik’s family cannot also bear the cost of such treatment.
Six days after the incident, the police decided to hold the headmaster and class teacher responsible for the alleged delay in treatment. Many parents of school students believe that the teachers should take care of the safety of students inside the classrooms, but teachers sounded disturbed by the police decision.
“How can one hold the teachers responsible for such freak incidents?” asked a school teacher who did not want to be named.
