Sudden squall shocks Chennaiites
Rains that lashed Chennai accompanied with strong winds threw the traffic out of gear on Wednesday evening.
Thousands of passengers were stranded as both rail and road traffic was severely hit. “The squall and rain mainly hit the north and central part of the city as per the pictures available with the Doppler weather station,” said Dr Y. E. A. Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
He said during southwest monsoon, it was normal to experience a weak low pressure in the East Coast and this led to the sudden rain and winds.
The rains continued for an hour affecting the movement of vehicles while also bring down visibility levels. Nungambakkam recorded 2 cm rain on Wednesday, while it was meagre at Meenambakkam.
At various places, two-wheelers, cars and autos were caught in accidents due to poor visibility.
Eyewitnesses said a car and an autorickshaw collided at Royapuram, while at Mandaveli, an auto and a two-wheeler were involved in a mishap.
Strong winds greeted visitors at the Marina beach. “The wind was blowing at a high speed and my seven-year-old daughter had a curious look,” said G. Srinivasan, a resident of Besant Nagar.
