Stray menace dogs Chennai
A four-and-half-year-old boy attacked by a stray dog in Ambattur a couple of weeks back died on Monday at the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, of suspected rabies.
The boy, Azin, son of Masthan, a daily worker, of Samudra Nagar, was bitten by a stray dog on April 18 when he was playing in front of his house.
“It seems he had pelted stones at the dog which in turn attacked him. He suffered multiple injuries all over his body. It is possible the animal had rabies,” hospital sources said.
The boy was admitted to the ICH on Sunday night around 9 pm by his family members, 18 days after he was bitten by the dog. The family had been treating the boy in a private hospital till then.
However the boy died on Monday morning without responding to treatment. Hospital sources said the boy died of suspected case of rabies.
Following the death of the boy, the Chennai corporation has stepped up stray dog hunting in the Ambattur area.
The civic authority had taken the body of the boy for further tests. The family of the rabies victim initially refused to hand over the body to corporation officials saying that they wanted to bury it.
Officials and doctors convinced the family saying the boy didn’t die a natural death and they needed the body for further test.
Later, the family paid their last tribute to the boy in the ambulance and allowed the officials to take the body for tests. The family members have been administered rabies injection.
