SMS attendance from June 1

In order to monitor the proper functioning of teachers, an SMS-based application will be developed and integrated as a part of the EMIS (Education Management Information System).

This application will be activated when the schools reopen from June 1, announced school education minister N.R. Sivapathy in the Assembly.

“The attendance of teaching and non-teaching staff will be communicated by the headmasters to the central server, which in turn transmit the information to all higher officials of the school education department. This will bring discipline and ensure availability of teachers in classrooms,” the minister added.

The portal of the school education department will have the entire database of schools, teachers, students and officials by the end of 2012-13.

Also, students of government and government-aided schools will be provided with smart card that will consist of details of students. “The details will be stored in the central server. The data will be useful for providing all facilities to children,” the minister said.

The state government has also sanctioned five smart schools under the State Government Scheme at the cost of Rs 25 lakh per school. Thiruchendurai, Aylapettai, Ettarai, Somarasampettai and Inamkulathur Government Higher Secondary Schools in Tiruchy will be provided with this facility.

“In smart schools, the emphasis would not only be on the use of information technology, but also on the use of skills and values that will be imparted in the next millennium. Five other smart schools have been sanctioned during 2011-12 at the cost of Rs 25 lakh per school,” said Sivapathy.

With the introduction of trimester pattern from this academic year, eight crore textbooks are being printed and 92 lakh students will be benefited, the minister said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
