Slaughterhouse minus recycling plant poses risk
The Perambur slaughterhouse has committed several violations including pollution norms by discharging waste from the abattoir into the Cooum river, which poses a serious threat to the environment, allege animal welfare activists.
According to sources, the slaughterhouse lacks required mechanism such as a recycle plant and a render plant that is mandatory as per law. It poses a serious threat to the environment.
“The stench that emanates from the slaughterhouse is unbearable. It stinks up the whole place. But, we have got used to it,” said Prabhu, a resident of Pulianthope.
“As per Indian law, it is illegal to slaughter healthy animals. The Perambur abattoir slaughters healthy as well as sick animals to export meat to western countries.
The veterinarians work hand in glove with the private firm that runs the slaughterhouse, to provide fake certification to facilitate the export of meat,” alleged Gouhar Azeez, animal welfare activist.
“Moreover, it is illegal to operate a slaughterhouse in a residential area. The locals are ignorant about the effects it can have on their health. The corporation should take note of such violations and act immediately,” she urged.
“Illegal slaughterhouses cause economic loss. They deprive our farmers of their livelihood forcing them to commit suicide,” said an activist.
