Skywalk to ease T Nagar crowd
In an effort to ease traffic congestion and offer ample walking space for pedestrians in the city’s commercial hub, T. Nagar, the Chennai corporation has nominated a US-based firm to carry out feasibility studies to establish a skywalk for commuters, multi-level car parking, dedicated hawkers zone and more at strategic locations.
The corporation held a public consultation on Thursday on the urban re-development of T. Nagar.
Residents and stakeholders offered suggestions on the proposals and also requested the civic body to address several issues such as encroachment and garbage disposal before implementing the project.
“Almost all shops on Ranganathan street do not comply with the fire safety norms, according to an RTI reply obtained recently.
Unless action is taken against illegal structures, the proposal for re-development of T. Nagar will not be successful,” opined Mr Jayaraman, a resident of T. Nagar.
According to the American consulting firm, Jones Lang LaSalle, the proposed re-development project, covering 6.86 square km of T. Nagar area, has three development options: pedestrianisation, traffic-calming and multi-level crossing.
Some of the proposals are conversion of Thyagaraya Nagar, Pondy Bazaar and parts of South Usman Road into a pedestrian walkway.
Construction of a skywalk (elevated walkway) will connect the T. Nagar bus terminus and Mambalam railway station.
There would be dedicated hawker zones south and north of Panagal Park, South Usman Road and Madley Road.
In addition, there are proposals to extend the flyovers on Bazullah Road and South Usman Road and construct additional bus terminus at Valluvarkottam and Saidapet.
Speaking at the meeting, mayor Saidai Duraisamy said, “Mistakes committed in the past will not be repeated. Soon, T. Nagar will be developed into a model constituency.”
