Shutterbug-businessman hunts for rare pictures
Want to get acquainted with the men and women who made independence possible? Then the bustling Kasi Chetty street in Parry’s Corner is the place to go. No passerby here can miss rare photographs of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose exhibited on a wall for public viewing thanks to a photographer turned businessman who has made it his hobby to collect rare pictures of the time.
B. Anand Kumar, 47, has a collection of over 25,000 photographs in a 70 sq ft room of various freedom fighters, and those who have left their imprint in history. Whenever he is tipped off about rare photographs that need care, he rushes off to find them, wherever they may be.
About devoting a whole wall to Netaji, he says, “I am a big fan of Netaji and wanted to create awareness about our great leaders in this film crazy state”. He also hopes to inspire youth with his collection. “The young must be fearless and not be cowed down by threats,” he declares.
People are usually amazed by his collection. “ It is extraordinary. I have never seen such rare photographs,” says Mr M. Perumal, a septuagenarian. Mr Kumar is now readying to hold an exhibition of his photographs to reach a wider audience. What is stopping him, however, is lack of infrastructure
