Shop till you drop for kolu dolls at Poompuhar
People wishing to possess a variety of Navarathri kolu dolls will be spoiled for choice at the government Poompuhar showroom.
The exciting range has many attractive themed dolls, particularly the Dasavatharam set and the beautifully carved Lakshmi set
The exhibition signifies that Chennai is getting geared up for the colourful nine-day Dussehra festival. Poompuhar has sourced dolls from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, apart from local artisans. It has set a sale target of Rs 50 lakh during the Kolu festival this year.
Clay, wood, papier mache, dolls recounting old-time fables come alive in a variety of colours at the ‘Kolu Toys Fair,’ inaugurated by Sheela Rani Chunkath, additional chief secretary and chairperson and managing director of TN Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd here on Thursday evening.
Rajasthan’s popular Copa dolls and Andhra Pradesh’s Kondapalli toys are also among the attractions.
The toys are categorised under 96 sets such as Ramar, Dasavatharam, Karthikai Penkal set, Gopier Nandanam, Ranganathar, Ramar Pattabishekam, Suriyaratham, Tirupati Brahmotsavam, Meenakshi kalyanam and Srinivasa kalyanam, are on display.
A 10 per cent discount is provided on all dolls displayed at the exhibition, which is on till Oct. 23 between 10 am and 8 pm.
