Rs2 crore antlers seized by police
The police has seized antlers worth Rs2 crore illegally kept in the godown of an export firm in neighbouring Tiruvallur on Friday.
The police also arrested Subramani, 44, who owns Bagyarekha Exports, and his manager Kothandaraman, 45.
Police said that the firm was dealing in high-value buttons for high-end dresses and had been allegedly exporting and selling buttons made of antlers illegally.
The firm had a licence to export articles made of antlers but this had had expired in September 2009. But it continued to do the business without renewing it, the police said. However, the compnay continued to make articles, especially buttons, using the antlers.
Based on information that Subramani was continuing his business despite the licence expiring, the police on Friday morning raided his firm and seized a large quantity of antlers and also products made of it.
“The value of the seized articles is estimated to be around Rs2 crore. Both of those arrested were later remanded to judicial custody,” the police said.
