Residents stage demo demanding water
Residents of Chengalpet and neighbouring areas, who have been suffering from acute shortage of drinking water, on Tuesday staged a demonstration seeking better supply of piped drinking water.
The angry residents also ghearoed the local Town Planning Officer Mr Senthil Kumar and protested till noon.
Sources said the municipality with a population of close to one lakh residents, is currently facing acute shortage of drinking water as two motor pumps have developed snags and the ground water table in the village wells have depleted.
“The local body led by the AIADMK never witnessed any development during the previous DMK regime and council proceedings were often disrupted.
And now the DMK is the ruling party in the council and is protesting against the AIADMK government,” said Mr C.N. Sekar, a resident of Maraimalar Nagar, who frequents Chengalpet town.
Besides shortage of drinking water, poor roads, lack of streetlights, poor sanitation and erratic dumping of garbage are the other serious problems in the locality, he added.
“Almost all the wards suffer from water shortage and there is no sanitation in the locality,” complained Chengalpet legislator Mr D. Muruges of DMDK.
