Mystery shrouds a firing incident in which a 35-year-old real estate agent suffered bullet injury early on Tuesday morning near his friends’ house in Krishna Nagar extension, Maduravoyal. Mr L. Manikumar suffered an injury on his stomach and is being treated at a private hospital in Porur.

Mr Manikumar, a native of Thoothukudi, was in the business of selling CDs besides brokering real estate deals. He was known as ‘CD’ Kumar in the neighbourhood.

His friends claim they heard a knock on the door around 4.30 am and opened the door to find him on the ground with bleeding injuries. They told the police that Mr Manikumar did not tell them about the shooter but just asked them to rush him to a hospital.

“We are probing all angles. Only one round was fired,” said Mr Prem Anand Sinha, deputy commissioner, Anna Nagar, after visiting the spot.

“By Wednesday morning, he will be in a position to talk. He will certainly know who shot him,” said a police officer.

Mr Manikumar was also in the business of selling CDs and was known as ‘CD’ Kumar in the neighbourhood. His brother Karthik, working in an export firm, was also staying with him in Krishna Nagar.

“It is possible that Manikumar went out to meet somebody after 11 pm and was followed by the killer who shot him in front of the apartment where his friends, from Nellore, were staying. Manikumar used to execute deals for a builder staying in the same apartment. We are questioning his friends — a student, BPO employee and builder — staying in the flat,” said Anna Nagar DC Prem Anand Sinha.
Four failed bullets, shot from a country-made gun, have been recovered.

According Mr Manikumar’s mother Seethalakshmi, she had not seen him since Monday afternoon. “I heard his bike around 11 pm. He opened the gate, but instead of coming up to our first floor house, he went out again,” she told DC.

On Tuesday morning, round 5.30 am, Mr Karthik received a call from Sankar and rushed out without telling her anything.

Mr Manikumar used to visit his friends in Manobala apartment occasionally. His two-wheeler was found outside the apartment.
