Rajan granted bail in bribery case
The Madras high court on Thursday granted bail to C. Rajan, additional director general, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and his driver Murugesan, who were arrested by the CBI on charges of demanding and accepting bribe.
Justice M.M. Sundresh granted bail to them on the condition that they execute a bond for `10,000 with two sureties each, appear before the CBI everyday at 10.30 am until further orders and not enter the building in which they were working before their suspension.
Almost all the witnesses have been examined, the judge said. The material documents have been taken into custody. Only one witness, a foreign national, has to be examined and this was likely to be done shortly.
The petitioners custodial interrogation was over. “Since the petitioners are under suspension, this court is of the view that there is no likelihood of tampering with the records,” the judge said.
Rajan was arrested on March 6 on the basis of a complaint by one F. Ubaidullah of Pudupet that DRI, Chennai, had conducted searches at the premises of Joseph, a friend of the complainant, and seized cheque leaves of Superking Myachzin, a relative of Joseph, and had frozen two of his bank accounts.
When they later approached the official to defreeze the accounts he had allegedly demanded Rs 8 lakh and Rs 2 lakh was paid in advance, the complainant alleged.
