Puzhal prison to get bazaar, bakery
In a bid to take prison reforms forward and make prisoners renounce their criminal background by becoming socially enterprising, the state government on Thursday announced setting up of a bakery unit and also a prison bazaar at the Puzhal central prison.
“Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered the setting up of a modern bakery at the cost of Rs 45 lakh as part of the government’s objective to involve prisoners in gainful activities,” commercial taxes, registration and law minister C. Ve.
Shanmugam told the Assembly. Wrapping up the demand for grants for his departments in the Assembly he said the inmates of the prison would prepare delicious products which would be sold to hospitals and in the open market.
Also, a ‘prison bazaar’ would be established to market various products like handmade paper, soap, cloth, boots and cots made by the prisoners.
Hitherto, these commodities were being supplied free of cost to various government departments.
