Private parking lots turn money spinners
Parking lots have turned out be a lucrative business on General Patters road and Pycrofts Road in Royapettah, ever since changes were made to the traffic flow on arterial Mount Road to facilitate metro rail work, thus adding to the parking woes.
Cashing in on the situation, both private players and the Chennai Corporation have begun to rent space for parking to make quick bucks.
“Ever since the traffic changes were made, we have been left with no space for parking. Our business has been badly affected. We are forced to park our customers' vehicles inside Jayaprada theatre, which has leased the space for parking,” revealed a shopkeeper on General patters road.
As a result of traffic changes, customers find it tough to park their vehicles and if alternate arrangements are not provided, it will adversely hit the trade, the shop owners added.
In an effort to help them employed, the city corporation decided to lend its school ground on Pycrofts road for parking purposes.
“After requests from the local labourers, the Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy decided to approve the lending of the corporation school ground for the welfare of the youth who were affected by the traffic changes”, local councillor Ali Khan Basheer said.
The owners of auto spare parts shop, which require parking space, are using the ground for parking the vehicles by paying Rs 50 for 2 hours.
The ground will be lent for a period of one year, until the traffic arrangement is reversed, the councillor said.
