Plastic-free Karaikal port soon
The Karaikal Port promoted by the MARG group will soon become a plastic-free zone. On the occasion of World Environment Day on Tuesday, employees of the port have decided to take a pledge to keep the premises environment friendly.
The company has also decided to plant 1000 trees inside the port premises apart from holding a photo exhibition on environment friendly measures.
The port is in a process of developing a green belt. Already 40,000 fast growing varieties of tress have been planted inside the port’s premises.
The port authorities have also decided to screen visitors and not allow any plastic inside its premises from Tuesday.
“Paper bags produced by women’s self-help groups will be handed over as substitutes,” said Mr K.N. Ramesh, chief operating officer, MARG Karaikal. MARG group chairman and managing director Mr G.R.K. Reddy said that the port was not just an engine for growth but also a platform for them to take the lead in creating an environment conscious society.
“The port accords high priority to eco-friendly systems and processes. It is part of our continuous efforts to make the port a responsible corporate entity that leads the way as an example for others to follow,” he added.
He further said that the port had taken various environmental measures such as cost effective methods for drip irrigation, groundnut cultivation, robust methods for preventing pollution, innovative and effective ways of scrap usage, sewage treatment for water conservation and using kitchen waste as soil compost.
