Partners thank DC for campaign
“We sincerely thank Deccan Chronicle for the e-waste campaign launched in a first of its kind initiative at the Madras University on April 1.
The main aim of this initiative, which is to step up awareness for e-waste hazards and the importance of recycling, has been achieved, thanks to the extensive coverage provided in its Green Chronicle page”, says Ms L Srilakshmi, senior executive, Global e-Waste Management and Services (GEMS). '
DC along with GEMS conducted an awareness drive in Chennai from April 21. As a result, several residents in the city and suburbs called up offering their electronic gadgets for disposal.
These calls were segregated area wise and GEMS started collecting e-waste from homes and offices each day.
By April end, this campaign became hugely successful in spreading the information about the hazards of e-waste materials and educating people about the new e-waste legislation that got implemented beginning of May.
“Even as we collected as much as 560 kilos of e-waste just in the last couple of weeks of our vans visiting the Chennai homes, more and more enquiries are pouring in.
Clearly, the campaign message has hit the bull’s eye. People are waking up to the serious hazards due to e-waste, particularly for the children at home”, adds Srilakshmi.
