Panel happy with port safety
Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said the parliamentary standing committee of home affairs was totally satisfied with the safety and security arrangements at Madras Atomic Power Station in Kalpakkam, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) and Chennai Port Trust (CPT).
He added that the committee would incorporate the inputs given by the state government and these institutions in its recommendations to Parliament. The committee is also expected to review the situation in different parts of the country.
After visiting Kalpakkam on Thursday, the parliamentary committee headed by Mr Naidu went to CPCL and Chennai port on Friday to study the safety and security measures taken up by these institutions in the backdrop of recent happenings in the country including the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
Noting that coastal security has become important in recent years, Mr Naidu told reporters that the parliamentary committee also studied disaster management preparation of these institutions.
The state government represented by chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi and revenue secretary Ramesh Ram Mishra briefed the committee on safety and security measures taken in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, Tiruvallur collector Ashish Chatterjee and Kancheepuram collector Hanish Chhabra made powerpoint presentation on disaster management in their districts.
