Pack off Lankan airmen undergoing training: J Jayalalithaa
Taking strong exception to nine Sri Lankan Air Force personnel getting trained at the Indian Air Force base at suburban Tambaram here, chief minister Ms J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday demanded that they be sent back as training them in India, that too in Tamil Nadu, was not only inappropriate but also a huge insult to Tamils.
The AIADMK supremo in a statement recalled that she had piloted a unanimous resolution in the state Assembly calling for an India-sponsored international economic embargo on Sri Lanka until Tamils in that country secured the rights and opportunities to live as equals with Sinhalese.
“By keeping mum on that resolution and now providing this nine-month training for the Sri Lankan Air Force personnel in Tamil Nadu, the Central government has insulted Tamils”, she said.
“I am making it clear to the Centre that at a time when a strong demand is being made across the world to take action against the perpetrators of war crimes in Sri Lanka, this act of providing training for Sri Lankan Air Force personnel is not only inappropriate but also anti-Tamil”, Ms Jayalalithaa said, demanding that the Lankans be sent back forthwith.
All the other political leaders in the state, including the DMK president M Karunanidhi and the Tamil Nadu Congress president B. S. Gnanadesikan, also demanded that the training of Sri Lankan Air Force men in Tambaram must be stopped.
