Officials seize plastic from shops
Tension prevailed at the Broadway bus terminus on Wednesday after a few shop owners gheraoed the corporation health officials who inspected the establishments to confiscate plastic items that did not conform to norms and were not bio-degradable The situation turned ugly at one stage as the shop owners used foul language against a few corporation workers.
The civic body roped in all the sanitary inspectors for the inspection that was conducted in all the 15 zones of the city Corporation.
In Broadway area alone, the civic officials have seized about two tonnes of plastic and by evening the had health officials raided close to five tonnes of plastic.
Despite resistance in several commercial areas, the health department has seized plastics and non-biodegradable articles that have a thickness of less than 40 microns.
More such drives against plastics will be conducted in the city, a senior corporation official said.
