Officials crack down on quality of tanker water
As part of the intensified drive to prevent the outbreak of water borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea in the city, a team of officials from the Chennai corporation together with food safety department inspected private water tankers supplying drinking water to the city.
According to a food safety official, the drive was initiated as per the instruction of the corporation commissioner and food safety commissioner.
Nearly 90 lorries were found to be carrying non-chlorinated water to various parts of the city during the drive, which began on Thursday. Officials also inspected drinking water cans and seized about 44 cans without a genuine label on it.
A team of 6 officials from both the departments led by designated officer S. Lakshmi Narayan carried out inspections across the city.
“The awareness drive will go on until the lorry owners change their attitude. We just want to ensure that the residents are provided safe drinking water. The drivers must chlorinate the water at source. We have collected information about lorry owners.
We will soon be sending a communication to them asking all owners to add residual chlorine to the water being supplied,” said S. Lakshmi Narayan, designated officer, food safety department.
It may be recalled that drivers of Chennai metro water department were instructed to provide safe, potable and chlorinated water to the residents of Chennai by its managing director at a meeting.
