Officials blame land handover delay
Delay in handing over the land in the Kasimedu fishing harbour for widening the 1.6 km stretch from the zero gate to S.N. Chetty Street is hampering the progress of the Rs 600 crore Ennore Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) work, according to NHAI officials.
“The Chennai port trust (CPT) has failed to act on the directive of Speaker D. Jayakumar to hand over the letter of allotment for 146 fishing stalls within three days,” said a senior NHAI official.
He last reviewed the progress of the work on June 4.
Besides handing over the fishing stalls, CPT should also provide alternative sites for the Bhavani Amman Temple and relocate people residing in Cherian Nagar and NTO Kuppam, the official said.
In the port users meeting held on Friday, CPT officials raised apprehension over handing over the stalls as they were not sure whether the fishermen would shift to it after getting the letter of allotment.
The project envisages widening of the 9-km stretch of the TPP High Road into a four-lane highway with two-lane service roads on either side.
“We plan to complete the widening works on the TPP road before the onset of the monsoon. We have partially completed widening works on the 6 km of the TPP road stretch,” the official said.
Besides the improvement and strengthening of Manali Oil Refinery Road and Northern Segment of Inner Ring Road, the project also proposes to widen the 7-km stretch of Ennore Expressway into a four-lane road with service roads on both sides.
“We are hopeful of completing the work before the June 2013 deadline,” said the official.
