Notice to TN on Kovai temple plea to sell land
The Madras high court has ordered notice to the state government on a petition from a 150-year-old temple, seeking permission to sell its land to a nearby rich temple so as to perform regular pooja and kumbhabhishekam.
Justice K. Chandru posted after four weeks, further hearing of the petition filed by the Balavinayagar temple, represented by its hereditary trustee A. Dharmalingam in Coimbatore district.
According to Dharmalingam, the temple at Palathurai near Coimbatore was more than 150 year old and it owns 11.04 acres at Arisipalayam village in the district.
He has been managing the affairs of the temple for nearly four decades. Since no returns were coming from the endowment lands, the temple could not conduct kumbhabhishekam for all these decades.
Seven years ago, the management proposed to sell the temple lands and keep the proceeds for the temple rituals.
When there was no response from the government, it was constrained to approach the high court, which had directed the authorities to consider the proposal.
After another round of litigation, the government asked the management to attempt to raise donations for the upkeep of the temple and that it could try to sell the lands to a richer temple nearby.
Accordingly, the new proposal of the management was to sell the land to either Echanaarivinayagar temple or Subramaniah Swami Thirukoil at arudhamalai.
