North Chennai bus fares go up

Commuters hailing from several parts of north Chennai will have to shell out more, from Rs 2 to Rs 5, towards bus tickets from Wednesday as there would be diversion due to the ongoing flyover works at Mint, and metro rail works.
The MTC authorities issued a circular to the depots concerned on Tuesday. Though the buses have been plying on the diverted routes for nearly a month, the circular was issued only on Tuesday.
Sources said MTC authorities have issued a circular to a few depots in north Chennai, including Tondiarpet on Tuesday, directing them to increase the fares of buses that ply through diverted routes, owing to metro rail works and flyover works in Mint and on Tiruvottiyur high road in Washermanpet.
“Passengers travelling by over hundred buses, including routes 32A, 6A, 44, 44C, operated from Tollgate, Manali and IOC, besides services that are operated through Mint from tail-end suburbs like Karanodai (57F), Gummidipoondi (557) and Madhavaram (38H) will have to spend Rs 2-Rs 5 more, depending upon the services,” an official explained.
“It (fare hike) is not something new. Whenever route diversions were effected, owing to metro rail works, the fares have been revised immediately according to the increase in distance,” a senior MTC official said.
He added that an additional stage would be added for an extension of Rs 2 km. Denying reports of fare hike on a few routes in south and central Chennai, MTC officials clarified that no such increase of fares had been effected in recent times and the last hike was way back in March in a few areas of south and central Chennai.
