Nilgiri tea is cup to cheer at Olympics

It is a ‘must-taste’ and ‘must-buy’ product of the Nilgiris and now it is going global with the Olympics. Tea Board of India is grabbing the opportunity of the world event with both hands to promote Nilgiris tea in a big way to further explore the global market.
Mr R. Ambalavanan, executive director of tea board, zonal office, Coonoor, said the director of tea promotion of tea board office, London, is making arrangements for promoting Nilgiris tea as its varieties like orthodox, BOP and green tea will be made available for everyone to taste and enjoy.
Though tea board has been making efforts to promote Nilgiris tea abroad, it is for the first time that the tea will be promoted during Olympics, Mr Ambalavanan pointed out.
Union commerce minister Anand Sharma will host ‘India Tea Dinner’ during Olympics for which delegates from various countries would be invited.
Apart from serving Nilgiris tea and a host of other promotional measures during Olympics, gift hampers of Nilgiris tea will also be distributed to visitors to the exhibition of Nilgiris tea around various venues in London. This effort is to further explore and expand the global market for Nilgiris tea.
Mr J.B. Subramanian, founder-president of the Nilgiris small and tiny tea growers association, said the tea board should exploit all opportunities and avenues to promote Nilgiris tea during the Olympics as it is a good chance to take the taste of Nilgiris tea to people from all over the world.
