Murder convict attacks cop
A criminal wanted in several cases was shot at by a police inspector for trying to flee after attacking the cop with a sickle in Chengalpattu. Both have been hospitalised with grievous injuries.
Police sources said inspector Baskaran suffered cut injuries on his forearm when murder convict Charles attempted to flee after attacking him during a search operation initiated by the local police near Chengalpattu on Friday morning.
Charles (25), a Chengalpattu-based history-sheeter, was involved in several criminal cases, including the murder of DMDK Chengalpattu town secretary Suresh, recently.
He was out on bail from Puzhal prison just about two months back and continued his illegal activities, the police said. Mr Baskaran received a tip-off that a gang of five persons, including Charles, was hatching a plot to commit a crime in Anna Nagar.
When Mr Baskaran visited the spot with a police team, the other members fled but Charles was caught. During interrogation, he revealed that the gang planned a murder and the weapons to be used to commit the crime were concealed in Pazhaveli, near Chengalpattu. Later, the police team escorted him to the spot where the weapons were buried.
As the team was digging up the weapons, Charles picked up a sickle and assaulted Mr Baskaran, inflicting cuts on his left arm, before attempting to flee, the police said. The inspector drew his revolver and warned the accused to halt, the police claim.
However, Charles ignored the warning and continued to run, and so the inspector opened fire at him. Police personnel overpowered the culprit when he fell after taking a bullet on his leg.
