Mishaps continue to haunt MTC
A spate of misfortunes have been haunting the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) for the past two weeks.
On Friday morning, an MTC bus on route No. 17 climbed a pavement in Kodambakkam after it collided with a car and another MTC bus. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Friday’s incident follows a bizarre incident that took place 10 days ago when an MTC bus on route No. 17 fell off the Gemini flyover. Another bus was mangled near Poonamallee a few days ago.
The accident on Friday is said to have been caused by a break failure and exposes the problems in the maintenance of MTC buses and the danger this poses.
The accident occurred at 8.15 am when the bus was approaching a traffic signal at Trustpuram. When a Tondiarpet depot bus on route number 37D plying from Vadapalani to Tollgate was approaching the signal it lost control and hit a car standing behind another MTC bus route number ‘17’ of Vadapalani depot that was waiting for the green signal.
Sensing the danger, the driver turned the vehicle to the left to avoid hitting the car, but failed to avoid the mishap.
“The bus hit the left rear of my car before brushing the other bus standing in front. It came to a halt only after hitting another car parked on the pavement,” said Ramesh, the driver of the car, who is yet to recover from the shock.
Luckily passengers both in the car and bus no. 17 escaped without injuries. The MTC driver told telling police that accident occurred because of a break failure.
