Minister seeks Congress role
Electricity minister Natham R. Viswanathan told the Assembly Friday that the Centre was not giving the state its due share of power.
Intervening during the speech of Congress MLA N.R. Rangarajan, Mr Viswanathan said: “Tamil Nadu’s share is 2,950 MW. But the Central government had cut down our share by 750 MW.
We are getting
only 2,200 MW of power.” The minister said despite the power crisis, the state was not pressing for more power.
“But the Central government should at least give the state its full due. It is unfair to cut down on our share,” the minister added. Mr Rangarajan had earlier spoken about the power situation in Tamil Nadu.
Local administration minister K.P. Munusamy also intervened and appealed to the Congress legislators to take up the issue with their high command. “Often, the Congress MLAs raise issues here.
But we have never seen any report saying that they have met their high command and raised the issues relating to the state with them. They keep saying that they are with us on issues but they have not shown it in action,” Mr Munusamy said.
Earlier, Mr Munusamy also said while the Central government was giving away 5,000 MW of power to neighbouring Pakistan, it was cutting down the share of power to its own state.
