Milk can fight malnutrition: Tanuvas VC
Despite India holding the No. 1 position in milk production, milk productivity remains one of the lowest, compared to foreign countries and, so, Tamil Nadu should take steps to breed more cattle, urged Dr Anil Kumar Srivastava, vice-chancellor, National Dairy Research Institute.
Addressing the 15th convocation of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University on Friday, he explained the significance of milk in the diet.
A majority of Indian women and children face malnutrition and 80 per cent of them face iron and protein deficiency. Quality buffalo milk is the need of the hour as it will help overcome the serious issue, he informed.
Governor Rosaiah, who gave away the certificates and medals to graduates, urged the veterinarians to work for the rural community and help in poverty eradication.
Tanuvas vice-chancellor, Dr R. Prabahakaran, said to meet the growing demands in the livestock sector, the varsity has initiated 18 different skill development programmes for the public and those interested in animal husbandry. The university is currently carrying out 154 research projects supported by Central government agencies.
A total of 99 medals were awarded for academic excellence and 225 graduates received their degrees.
Student J.C. Jeba Rose Jenifer received 27 gold medals for topping in the veterinary and animal husbandry degree exams.
State animal husbandry minister T.K.M. Chinayya and secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi participated.
