Mega push for sports in Tamil Nadu

In an effort to encourage sportspersons and develop infrastructure on a massive scale, the state government has announced several measures, including a state-level chief minister’s badminton cup, creation of posts for trainers and construction of two international-level swimming pools at Namakkal and Tiruvallur.

Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has sanctioned Rs2 crore for establishing the state-of-the-art swimming pools at a cost of Rs1 crore each.

According to an official release here on Sunday, Ms Jayalalithaa ordered the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) to conduct a state-level chief minister’s cup for ball badminton, similar to tournaments being organised by SDAT for other sports, and sanctioned Rs10 lakh for the purpose.
She ordered the installation of four high mast lights and two 75 KVA diesel generators at the Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore, costing Rs1.56 crore, for the conduct of day-and-night matches.

While 50 per cent of the cost would be borne by the state government, the balance would be spent from SDAT funds.

The posts of 80 coaches would be created in addition to the existing 139 sports trainers across the state to tap talent and groom sportspersons to take part in international competitions.

They would be appointed on a consolidated pay of Rs8,000 per month. This would entail an expenditure of Rs76.80 lakh annually for the government, the release added.

These measures were being initiated by the chief minister to nurture talent and ensure participation of sportspersons in national and international competitions, the release said.

The Jayalalithaa government has been taking numerous measures like opening sports hostels, providing financial assistance to sportspersons to participate in international events and constructing indoor stadiums.
