Medicos turn green saviours
Students of the Stanley medical college will plant 4000 saplings this year as part of their Green Hands club (GHC) initiative in Tiruvallur district.
The club was started with zeal to improve the green cover in the state. “We planted 4,000 saplings last year in Kaverirajapuram and 13 other villages near Thiruvallur.
Apart from planting saplings on our own, we also provide plants to voluntary organisations,” says G. Rajakama, MBBS final year student.
The GHC has about 50 members, all medicos, who engage in gardening and other green work in their campus.
They maintain a nursery and give off the saplings to whoever comes with a green itch. “Students from other schools and colleges have also approached us to be part of our initiative.
Our professors also encourage us to continue this work, though it’s pretty much un-medical”, says third-year medico P. Prashant. “We have already enrolled our juniors to continue this noble project”.
S.Venkatesan, a NSS volunteer from the Guindy engineering college was among the beneficiaries who had received saplings from the GHC.
“We looked for free saplings everywhere in vain. Thankfully we came to know about this club otherwise we would have terminated our annual tree plantation plan,” he told DC. For saplings contact 8056839340.
