MDMK pickets camp for Sri Lankan tamils
MDMK general secretary Vaiko and 500 of his supporters were arrested on Tuesday when they tried to picket at the Poonamallee Special Camp for Sri Lankan Tamils demanding release of the inmates.
Vaiko and the others were taken to a nearby marriage hall and were released later in the evening, police said.
An attempt by a MDMK member to immolate himself created a flutter. However, the police intervened and arrested the functionary.
The MDMK leader had announced that the special camp at Poonamallee would be picketed to demand that the inmates there and at the camp at Chengalpattu be moved to open camps.
The special camps acted as “detention camps”, he alleged and demanded that the Sri Lankan Tamils lodged there be released on humanitarian grounds.
The protest by MDMK came in the wake of an indefinite fast by Senthuran and six other Lankan Tamils since August 6.
Police had reportedly detained Senthuran at Chenkalpattu Detention Center for his suspected movement, but he was shifted to the Poonamallee Camp because of this prolonged agitation.
Vaiko demanded that the government release Senthuran immediately or shift him to any other open camp.
“If Tamils lodged in the camp are not released soon, we will launch a series of agitations,” he said.
