Mayor, officials visit Perungudi dumpyard
After Pallikaranai, it is now Perungudi dumpingyard that is burning. After miscreants set fire to it Tuesday night, the top brass of the city corporation inspected the yard on Wednesday and reviewed the arrangements in place.
Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy, in midst of his sudden inspection, said the chief minister was concerned about the piling garbage loads in Chennai and has directed the civic body to handle the waste in a systematic manner and dispose of them.
We are on the job of establishing new zero waste centres and monitoring miscreants who start the fire. CCTV cameras would soon be kept inside the yards. The miscreants set fire to collect remnants from tyres and plastic items, he explained.
He also checked the weighing machines and records maintained at the dumpyards and assured that dumping of garbage in adjacent Pallikaranai yard has been stopped. Additional private security personnel will be hired and three-shift security will be provided at the dumpyards, the mayor added.
“The garbage mounds accumulated over the years has resulted in the formation of methane and ethane gas and steps are being taken to prevent such fire accidents,” corporation commissioner D. Karthickeyan said.
A team from the Tamil Nadu pollution control board (TNPCB) has started collecting air samples from Pallikaranai and Perungudi areas. The gas emissions from the yard will be at their peak during summer and we are testing the air quality at our labs, TNPCB sources said.
