‘Legal heirs’ waiting for justice
Claiming themselves as the legal heirs of Varagunarama Pandia Chinna Thambiar, son of Senthattikalai Pandia Chinna Thambiar, the last zamindar of Sivagiri, Mr N. Jaganathan and Ms Padmini Rani filed several civil suits and appeals that are still pending regarding all the properties belonging to Sivagiri estate.
The properties were entrusted to the Tirunelveli collector for management under court of wards Act. Ms Padmini Rani also sought the account and to make the payment of the income acquired to the estate while it was in the management of the court of wards.
As per the directions of the bench on June 15, 2012, the government, through inspector of police, CCB, Chennai, filed a report. The report, handed over to the bench by special public prosecutor I.S.
Inbadurai, stated that huge amounts were deposited in the name of Pandiya’s king at Switzerland. Ms Vidhya Patwardhan took this job on commission basis, it said.
Ms Patwardhan claimed that she was holding the power of attorney for the properties. She is the sister of Ms Maya, who married Swiss national Giuseppe Leopoldo Cassina, who died in a road accident recently and was said to be the power of attorney for Mr Jaganathan.
Expressing satisfaction over the investigation report, the bench said the matter requires further investigation in respect of the properties of the Sivagiri estate situated throughout the state and also huge amounts were pending with the foreign bank.
The bench directed the government to hand over the papers to CB-CID, who would have to file a report within three weeks.
The Union finance ministry was also directed to find out if funds were parked in any Swiss bank to the credit of Pandiya’s king and file a report within three months.
