Leaders wish workers on May Day
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has sought the support of workers to make Tamil Nadu No. 1 in all fields.
Conveying her heartfelt wishes to the labour class on May Day eve, she said, “I need your support to empower the state in all fields. May Day signifies the victory of the working class which fought against slavery,” she said.
In his wishes for the day, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said Dravidian people are known for their hard work. “Whenever the DMK was in power, the government always introduced schemes for the welfare of the labourers,” he said.
CPM state secretary G. Ramakrishnan said workers should continue to strive to “maintain their rights and achieve higher standards of living”.
CPI state secretary T. Pandian said the working class should come forward to shine on the political platform and work for the welfare of not just labourers but also safeguard all living creatures and create a green environment.
Tamil Nadu Congress committee president B.S. Gnanadesikan said it was a golden period for labourers now.
“The UPA government hiked the salaries of the government staff based on the recommendations of the 6th pay commission. The Union government works for the rights and welfare of workers,” he said.
MDMK leader Vaiko urged workers to take a pledge against being exploited. “We have work for a society with equal opportunities,” he said.
