Korattur bus terminus yet to get facelift

The Korattur bus terminus is in dire need of a facelift.

Hundreds of commuters are forced to wait under the scorching sun or take refuge in nearby shops owing to the absence of basic amenities such as a shelter at the terminus. Moreover, lack of toilets makes it very difficult for the MTC staff.

Sources said that development had hit a roadblock owing to legal hurdles and a case with respect to encroachments was pending in court.

The elected councillors attached to the Ambattur zone meanwhile hardly participate in monthly zonal meetings, affecting the execution of civic projects in Korattur and its neighbouring areas.

“There is no shelter at the bus terminus which is a most important requirement. I usually take refuge at the ATM close by. There are not many shops to accommodate the thousands of commuters who wait at the terminus. During monsoon the situation is even worse as the place gets inundated and people find it very difficult to board the buses,” said Mr G. Kesavan a resident of Senthil Nagar.

“The major problem we face here is the absence of toilets. In case of an emergency we have to wait until we reach Parrys bus terminus which has toilets. There are also no drinking water taps, which is the need of the hour,” said an MTC bus driver.

When contacted, Mr Joseph Samuel, chairman, Zone 7 said, “We are awaiting directions from the court to begin eviction of encroachments on the land earmarked for the bus terminus.”

“Moreover, the AIADMK councillors have boycotted the last five zonal meetings resulting in a delay in executing developmental projects in the zone,” he added.
